Chapter Two Paging Dr. Whitney

Dr. Kevin Whitney is 35 years old and stood at just about six feet tall sporting medium length dark blonde hair.  He was in good health but he wasn’t a workout freak like his younger brother.  Kevin was a general practitioner with a small practice and cared about his patients. Kevin’s life was simple.  He took care of his patients and once work was done, he was a great husband and father. He coached his daughter’s soccer team and made sure his family knew they were the most important thing in his life. In high school he was a bit of an odity. He was the captain of the football team but also on the chess team. He loved playing both for the same reason, you had to think under pressure against a tough opponent.  That’s why he chose to be a doctor, constantly battling diseases, illnesses and helping people at the same time.  People who didn’t know him just didn’t understand Kevin.  At the age of 15 Kevin witnessed two of his friends die in a car accident. They had just left a party and were headed to another one. Kevin was traveling in a car behind them when his friends’ car crashed into another. They were both drunk and Kevin had no doubt that was the cause of their deaths. They had been encouraged to play a drinking game and they wanted to just so they could fit in with some of the older kids. He vowed that night he would never touch alcohol and he wouldn’t let the things in life that didn’t matter like money and popularity influence him. He got a job, saved his money, spent extra time studying so he could get a scholarship and go to med school. He always enjoyed life, but took it very seriously.

Kevin was a good provider but he did struggle to pay the bills. A few years ago Kevin forged documents to get a child a medical procedure quickly. The child’s condition wasn’t life threatening but he needed the procedeur. The insurance company wouldn’t cover the cost unless it was life threatening. Kevin forged documents and got the procedure done before the insurance company could investigate. The repercusions for Kevin was tough as his insurance rates went up to the point he could barely get by. He wanted to provide better for his family and started working harder to get a hospital position that would increase his income. He didn’t get the job because of the insurance company basically black listing him. He loved his family and with another baby on the way, he knew he would have to do something.

Even at a young age, Kevin disapproved of Kyle’s life style. When Kyle was 16, Kevin caught him and some of his friends smoking pot outside of school. Kevin confronted his brother and was surprised when Kyle reacted with violence. Kyle didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of his friends so he started swinging at Kevin. One of the punches connected and gave Kevin a bloody nose. Kyle stood there for a moment realizing his big brother just took his best punch and didn’t even flinch. He waited for the beating to come but Kevin just walked away. He always hoped he was a good role model for his younger brother, but that day he realized Kyle would take his own path through life.

With his life in order and things going great, Kevin was now worried about his daughter Rachel. Rachel was 10 years old and Kevin knew the teen years were fast approaching. He didn’t want his daughter to follow the track many other teens did so he kept her away from her uncle. A big shot who dates models and actresses would easily influence a 10 year old girl and put her on a path her father was against.

Kevin’s wife Lauren and he had met while they were at school. She was a few years younger than Kevin, she was five feet six inches tall, a curvy and healthy body, not model skinny. She sported long blonde hair that was usually in a pony tail. She graduated in the top five of her class and had a part time job as a content writer for several websites. She loved the job.  It paid for the groceries every week and allowed her to be a bit creative while still having time to be with her family. Lauren had seen Kevin everyday in a local coffee shop near school. Kevin was the assistant manager and Lauren preferred studying in the noisy coffee shop over the quiet library. Kevin had wanted to go up and say something to her but could never think of anything to start a conversation. One day he saw that Lauren was taking a class he took a year earlier and knew this was a great conversation starter. Unfortunately he never had the chance as he was walking over to her he slipped on some spilled coffee and landed on his head. He woke up in an ambulance and was surprised to see Lauren was with him. She felt bad because she was the one who spilled the coffee and while she was getting some napkins to clean it up, he slipped.

“I’m so sorry, are you ok?” Asked a frightened Lauren.

He just looked at her beautiful brown eyes and with a smirk said, “You know for 3 months I have been telling myself its okay to ask you out because you won’t bite, boy was I wrong!”

Their first date was in the hospital cafeteria. To this day Kevin still jokes that he planned the whole thing. “I wanted to get you alone, get off of work early, take you out to dinner but have it be some place cheap.  It worked out perfectly!”

Kevin was very protective of his family. He loved his wife and daughter and would do anything to make them happy. One thing he did not like was his wife’s ex boyfriend Ivan Castillo and his friend Tomas Sanchez. Ivan was five foot nine inches tall, stalky with tattoo’s and piercings everywhere. He had thin black hair and was never seen more than 50 feet from his motorcycle. Tomas was six feet three inches, muscular, very muscular and loved to show it. He had tattoos as well and a shaved head.

One day after they had been dating for a little while Kevin brought Lauren home to meet his parents.  As they were walking up to the house Kevin saw Justin and Ivan sitting on the front porch waiting for Kyle to get home. They always waited for him.  They were his lackeys. They provided him with drugs when he wanted them and made him feel impowered having two stooges who did his bidding. Kyle in return made sure they could pay their rent and of course would let them strut around town together when he went out. Lauren saw Ivan and gasped.  It turns out that Lauren dated Ivan when she was 16 and he was 19. Something about being seen by everyone in school with a 19 year old biker made her feel cool. Ivan didn’t mind being with a 16 year old.  Hell, he didn’t mind being with a 16 year old at the age of 28, why would her care at the age of 19. That was the day Kevin learned about Lauren and Ivan and he couldn’t believe it. Neither could Lauren.  She had no idea that Ivan was a friend of Kevin’s brother and was embarassed. Upon discovering the news himself, Tomas had to make the situation worse for Kevin. He hated Kevin.  They were in the same classes in high school and while Kevin was “Mr. Popular,” Tomas was viewed as a loser. The fact that Kevin’s new girlfriend was an ex of Ivan’s ate Kevin alive and Tomas knew it. Kevin hated Tomas and Ivan.  They were scum, leaches, and dirt. The news of Lauren and Ivan’s past and the added insult of Tomas rubbing it in filled Kevin’s mouth with bile. He knew the two jerks would never let this down, but obviously it didn’t change his mind when it came to feelings about Lauren.
